My favorite film adaptation of a book was the 1990's Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. I really liked the way they kept Shakespeare's old english with a more modern view of the play. For one, during the scenes with duels, instead of using swords, they used guns with the sword names written on them. They also turned the ancient city of Verona into a "hip" modern suburb, where the Montagues are surfers in hawaiian shirts and the Capulets are mobsters wearing suits and ties. This makes the play much easier to follow, but, does not stray too far from Shakespeare's original idea of the play. It makes the context of the play seem more real to the 21st century reader, which I enjoyed very much.
