What have you learned about your own style this semester? Do you agree with Vonnegut’s rules for style? What might you add, change, or remove?

  1. It still will not let me post a blog, but I can comment. I agree with Vonnegut’s rules of style, but I don’t feel they apply in college. In college it doesn’t matter what your writing style is. Professors give us assignments after assignments and they say to us to constantly use or our words, don’t plagiarize, or try to write like someone that you’re not. But, what they mean to say is don’t plagiarize, but it is up to you to figure out what style I like and you will know if I like your writing style based off of the grade you receive on the first paper. I feel that with college you have to abandon your own writing style and write in the professors writing style that they want for their class, which often resembles their own personal writing style. The only class that has allowed me to figure out my writing style is this class. When we had to do a research paper last semester, I did what I was taught to do when writing a research paper, which was not to make it personal or hear my voice throughout my paper. When I went to give you my paper, you commented on how you can’t hear my voice, and it is not personal at all. I thought great, but it wasn’t great because you wanted my typical writing style. My typical writing style, which consists of being able to hear my voice very easily and typically my writing is more personal and my personality can be found all over my papers. Again, just another example of trying to figure out what professors want and than producing that in your papers. I loved this class because writing is easy, and fun because I am being me. Other writing assignments for other subjects can be not so fun sometimes.

This semester i learned a much better way to write my papers. For me starting at an outline is crucial, and up until now i had never really used this much in my writing process. This has helped me create a much more concrete draft, as well as make sure my paper flows together well which is another big aspect of my writing that improves. I do agree with his rules for mine. The main one i found relevant was keeping it simple. I always try and get to focused on using big words, and having a good sounding paper that sometimes i get to extensive and complex with it. Keeping it simple has allowed me to sound much more like myself throughout my essays, resulting in a better final product. I cannot think of anything to change on Vannegut's rules.
